Ahn Si-Nae
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of intervention using a laryngeal elevation training machine on the swallowing function in a stroke patient with normal cognitive function.
The subject of this study was a 60-year-old male patient with stroke and dysphagia. Interventions of tongue strength training and laryngeal elevation training were performed for 5 weeks for 30 minutes each. The video fluoroscopic swallowing study, penetration aspiration scale, and Korean Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability were used to compare the scores of the swallowing function tests conducted before and after the intervention.
There was no difference in the scores before and after the intervention in the video fluoroscopic swallowing study and penetration aspiration scale, which are commonly used to evaluate the swallowing function in stroke patients with dysphagia. However, the Korean Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability used to compare the effect of laryngeal elevation training machine before and after intervention showed that spontaneous coughing after eating food and tongue strength had improved.
Therefore, we can conclude that tongue strength training and laryngeal elevation training can improve the swallowing function in stroke patients with dysphagia.
